First off I will say at the top of this post that I am not against teachers. I really am not. But, a person said I should post this news article because it is most of what the school district is asking for as their ‘short fall’ in next years budget. I personally don’t believe there is a short fall. But even if I am wrong, it is almost completely to cover increases in teacher wages and benefits.
According to Sue Schnorr’s quote in the article “the scenario amounts to a $3.1 million increase in salaries and benefits, along with a $1.6 million decrease in revenue for a total budget deficit of $4.7 million. They tell us that this deficit is carried over from that year to this year That is why they say they need the referendum. To fund the increase to teachers salaries and benefits.
What they do say is that it is to stop cuts. That list they created to get people to vote yes. However they want to the referendum to cover the increase in pay and benefits.
The article also states they might have use $5 million of their reserve fund to cover this shortfall. Reducing their reserve fund to $10 million. They didn’t do this so their reserve fund is still at $15 million. Yes they have $15 million to cover any problems. Like a 3.4 million short fall. When they say they have to do the cuts that is an out right lie. They don’t. They choose to do them and not have it covered by the reserve funds.
Karl the Chair of the yes group said in a recent meeting that it wouldn’t be right to use these fund to cover the deficit leaving them with nothing, “No one would run a household like that” Karl is supposed to be a smart professor but apparently he doesn’t understand that $15 million minus $3.4 million is $11.6 million left. I would love to run a house hold with $11.6 million in reserve. Such a hardship! Which just goes to show people that just because someone has a degree doesn’t mean they are smart.
Here is the article. I will also post the text below in a comment for anyone that can’t access The Oshkosh Northwestern. it’s a short but powerful article stating thing the district doesn’t want people to remember. After all if people know they have money the cuts list isn’t really a big threat is it? – Jim LeClaire
